Did You Know?

Racine County is rich in history: its people, its architecture, and its industrialized past. Here are a few fun factoids to tickle your fancy! We will be updating these periodically, so check back for some more interesting tidbits!

At One-Time, Racine had an NFL Franchise!

In 1921, William Horlick paid $100 for a franchise in the NFL and named the team "Racine Legion." Its first game was a loss to George Halas's Chicago Bears 6-0. The second game was a win over the Packers 14-0. Green Bay and Racine played to a 3-3 tie in the championship game in 1921. After five years of competition, the team lacked financial backing and sold the franchise to Portsmouth, Ohio. It was then sold again to Detroit and now it is known as the Detroit Lions.

Laurel Clark Called Racine Home.

Horlick High School graduate Laurel Clark was among the seven astronauts killed when the space shuttle Columbia exploded Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003.

Clark was the first Racine County native to fly into space. After the disaster news crews from around the United States flocked to the parking area across from Horlick High School to report on the disaster. Dedications and memorials went on for days, to remember and honor the seven fallen astronauts.
